Insights from Cape Flats Living Lab: Emerging Contaminants and Groundwater Protection

The Cape Flats Aquifer Living Lab hosted an awareness and networking event on 29 January 2026 at the Wolfgat Nature Reserve Educational Centre in Tafelsig, Cape Town, in collaboration with the City of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University. Held under the theme “Emerging contaminants, health risks, and innovative solutions to monitor and protect water resources,” the event brought together staff from local nature reserves, including professionals involved in community outreach, conservation, maintenance, and pollution control.

The event focused on two key objectives: raising awareness of water pollution, particularly how surface contamination can affect groundwater reserves, and presenting the tools being developed through MAR2PROTECT to help prevent and mitigate such impacts. Participants were introduced to technological solutions from the Stellenbosch University Water Institute and to the Cape Flats Aquifer Living Lab. An additional objective included establishing a foundational relationship with Wolfgat nature reserve to encourage future collaboration and organisation of societal outreaches.

Discussions benefited from the diversity of attendees, ranging from municipal field workers to environmental managers, and highlighted the need for collaboration across different socio-economic contexts. Many participants expressed interest in gaining the skills required to monitor groundwater and to act as educators within their own communities.

A practical demonstration using a physical groundwater flow and pollution model was one of the highlights of the day, visually illustrating how everyday activities above ground can directly affect underground water systems. Combining informative presentations with interactive dialogue, the event created an atmosphere of enthusiasm, leaving participants inspired to play an active role in protecting vital water resources.

Bringing MAR2PROTECT Results and Materials Closer to Everyone

Bringing MAR2PROTECT Results and Materials Closer to Everyone

The MAR2PROTECT Knowledge Center has been fully renewed and reorganised to ensure that all project materials and results are now easily accessible to everyone.

The updated Knowledge Center brings together all MAR2PROTECT results in a clear and user-friendly space, enabling different audiences to easily find, explore and reuse the project’s outputs. All materials are organised into four main sections:

  • Communication materials, which include the project’s visual identity as well as a range of resources presenting MAR2PROTECT’s mission and objectives. This section features brochures, roll-ups, videos and other outreach materials designed primarily for a general audience.
  • MAR2PROTECT in Practice, which showcases the project’s results and outcomes for different target groups. Here, users can access key project deliverables, policy briefs, journal articles and conference proceedings, addressing the needs of policymakers, practitioners and the scientific community.
  • Posters from the project’s demo sites, offering a clear and visual overview of each demo site’s characteristics and the treatments tested.
  • Clustering activities, which compiles all materials jointly produced with ZeroPollution4Water Cluster

In addition, the Knowledge Center provides direct access to Zenodo, the EU’s open public repository, where all MAR2PROTECT dissemination materials are compiled within a dedicated community.

As MAR2PROTECT enters its final year, the Knowledge Center will continue to be regularly updated with the latest results and outputs. Much more is still to come. Overall, this renewed knowledge hub offers a simple, transparent and accessible gateway to all MAR2PROTECT materials, reinforcing the project’s commitment to openness and knowledge sharing.

MAR2PROTECT participated in the E-SPFdigit Workshop, an event focused on advancing soil health, sustainability, and the use of digital tools for environmental research. The workshop brought together European projects and experts to foster clustering, strengthen communication, and promote the exchange of knowledge on soil health monitoring, carbon farming practices, and environmental pollution.

The project was represented by Ana Pereiro (NOVA University), who contributed to discussions alongside sister projects NitroScope, WHEATWATCHER, LILAS4SOILS, and the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA OFC).

The exchange highlighted innovative approaches and practical perspectives aimed at supporting more sustainable, healthy, and resilient ecosystems, while encouraging collaboration and synergies across the research community.

MAR2PROTECT and E-SPFdigit, an EU Mission Soil project, become sister projects

MAR2PROTECT and E-SPFdigit, an EU Mission Soil project, become sister projects

We are pleased to announce that E-SPFdigit has joined the MAR2PROTECT Clustering Activities Network as a new sister project. Both initiatives will collaborate through joint actions and knowledge exchange in the coming months.

E-SPFdigit aims to develop digital tools for real-time soil and crop monitoring of contaminants — including PFAS, pesticides, heavy metals, and nutrients — at pilot sites in Greece and Spain. Advancing technologies from TRL-5 to TRL-8, the project combines advanced sensors, AI-driven data models, and machine learning to build a remote-sensing framework using autonomous robots and drones.

By integrating Earth Observation data, E-SPFdigit will enhance predictive insights into soil health. All tools will be incorporated into a secure Decision Support System (DSS), enabling informed and automated decisions for sustainable soil management.

Together, MAR2PROTECT and E-SPFdigit will strengthen the European research ecosystem on contaminant monitoring and remediation, promoting innovation and collaboration towards a cleaner environment.
