Frielas Livinglab brings stakeholders together for better local groundwater management

Frielas Livinglab brings stakeholders together for better local groundwater management

MAR2PROTECT has successful launched the Frielas LivingLab in Portugal during the last week. The event was proudly hosted by NOVA FCT, as the third demosite of the project.

This exciting event was achieved in collaboration with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, including the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), the Regulatory Authority for Water and Waste Services (ERSAR), the Municipality of Loures, the Municipality of Lisbon, the Municipality of Almada, Lisbon E-NOVA, the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC), the Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences (MARE), the Portuguese Association of Environmental Technologies Companies (Apemeta), Águas do Tejo Atlântico, and Aquapor, among others.

The first workshop brought together these prominent entities with the aim of discussing groundwater management both nationally and across Europe. The primary focus was on ensuring the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of the strategies proposed by the project. During the event, successful case studies were explored, key challenges were identified, and next steps were outlined to drive progress in this vital area.

The upcoming workshop of the LivingLab will focus on gathering stakeholders’ opinions on the technologies developed in the project, as well as co-creating awareness activities for civil society on this crucial topic.

The implementation of the LivingLab is supported by the methodology and detailed guidance provided by IHE Delft Institute for Water Education.

MAR2PROTECT seeks to save the world’s groundwater from contamination through an innovative and holistic approach.  This research project brings together two main strategies, the M-AI-R tool and LivingLabs, to create new approaches for safeguarding groundwater as it becomes more vulnerable in the face of climate change.

The project kicked off in December 2022 and will run for four years. It is funded by the Horizon Europe programme with a total cost of €4.143.681,25. MAR2PROTECT will usher in a new generation of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) that engages stakeholders and enhances both groundwater quality and quantity.

MAR2PROTECT Shines Bright at the European Researchers’ Night

MAR2PROTECT Shines Bright at the European Researchers’ Night

The European Researchers’ Night, an annual celebration of science and research across the continent, recently took place, and MAR2PROTECT was front and center, showcasing its commitment to cutting-edge research and innovation. As part of this prestigious event, our project had the opportunity to engage with the public, share our discoveries, and capture some memorable moments.

A Glimpse into the Event

The event was a dazzling display of knowledge, curiosity, and collaboration. Researchers, scientists, and enthusiasts from diverse fields gathered to share their work, engage in discussions, and inspire the next generation of innovators. MAR2PROTECT was honored to be a part of this dynamic environment along with NOVA members.

The European Researchers’ Night was a shining example of the power of research to transform lives and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. MAR2PROTECT is honored to have been a part of this enlightening event and looks forward to continuing its mission of innovation and discovery. Together, we’re shaping a brighter future!

MAR2PROTECT present at the COIL-9 2023!

MAR2PROTECT present at the COIL-9 2023!

Ana Pereiro (from NOVA FCT) was a speaker during the COIL-9 the 24th of April. She explained what the project MAR2PROTECT is all about and how to prevent contamination related to global and climate change.

The COIL-9 (Congress On Ionic Liquids) is the main event in the broad field of ionic liquids and is being hosted in Lyon from the 24th to the 28th of April 2023.

The event aims to showcase the latest developments in ionic liquid and its related fields creating an interdisciplinary community concerned with materials and processes.

Thank you Ana for this exciting session!

MAR2PROTECT at Aqua Fórum 2022

MAR2PROTECT at Aqua Fórum 2022

This last 2nd of December, the MAR2PROTECT project appeared in the Aqua Fórum 2022 by the hand of the project coordinator Ana B. Pereiro from NOVA.

Here, she talked about what the project is all about and the steps it will follow to accomplish great results in the future of its life term.

This initiative is organized by the Intermunicipal Community of Alto Tâmega e Barroso in partnership with AquaValor and aims to enhance the resource “Water” as an aggregator element of the territory, in its four fundamental dimensions – Thermalism, Agriculture, Tourism and Energy, as a distinctive/identitary value, aggregator and potentiator of economic growth of the region.

MAR2PROTECT – which was launched last December 1st- will provide a holistic approach to prevent groundwater contamination from climate change impacts, through different innovative technologies.

Additionally, ‘Kick off Meeting’ will be held next 12th-13th December at the FEUGA base in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. This meeting will take place to explore future steps during this project’s four-year life term.

Don’t forget to follow MAR2PROTECT’s social media so you don’t miss a thing about the project!
