The MAR2PROTECT Cape Flats Aquifer Living Lab* hosted its first civil society engagement event in Stellenbosch, South Africa, on March 27th. This outreach event targeted Grade 7 students and teachers, with the goal of raising awareness about the risks of groundwater contamination and showcasing the innovative use of biosensors for water quality monitoring.
During the event, participants were introduced to the mini Stream Assessment Scoring System, which uses macroinvertebrates as indicators of water quality. Additionally, the group visited two river sites within the Eerste River Catchment, one pristine and the other more impacted. These sites serve as major sources of recharge to the Cape Flats Aquifer.
Finally, the event was a complete success, with all participants enjoying the visit and receiving a special t-shirt designed specifically for the occasion. This outreach is part of our ongoing efforts to engage local communities and foster greater understanding of sustainable water management practices.
This activity was possible thanks to the collaboration of the following partners: Stellenbosch University Water Institute, Stellenbosch University Faculty of Science, South African Department of Water and Sanitation, Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning
